What led you to apply to APHD at 萌妹社区?
APHD captivated me with its diverse and outstanding faculty members, whom I was eager to learn from and connect with. The lively academic and professional community struck me as a perfect fulcrum to be affiliated with as I build my professional profile. Additionally, I appreciate how APHD offers a wide range of study programs encompassing both professional and research streams, which allowed me to carefully consider one that aligns best with my career aspirations.

What was your past experience like?
Much of my experience prior to my master鈥檚 studies revolved around working part-time as an international student advisor while pursuing my undergraduate studies in Sociology in Japan. Through this part-time role, I engaged with many students who were interested in studying abroad, assisting them in finding scholarships and institutions that are reflective of their needs. On the side, I volunteered as a responder for a crisis and suicide lifeline, providing support to those who reached out. This role taught me the power of active listening, empathy, and crisis intervention techniques in supporting individuals cope with difficult circumstances. These experiences, when pictured together, really solidified my decision to pursue graduate studies in the field of counseling psychology and provided enriching learning opportunities as an aspiring mental heath practitioner.

Are there any past accomplishments that you would like to highlight?
Navigating the educational systems of multiple countries stands as one of my most significant accomplishments. Hailing from a small town in Cambodia, the idea that I would one day thrive in different linguistic and cultural environments seemed improbable. Yet, here I am, having embraced the challenge and thrived independently. Living across various countries has been profoundly enriching and humbling, shaping me into a continuously evolving individual. These experiences are treasures I hold dear, each contributing to my growth and understanding of the world.

What is one thing you like most about your experience so far at 萌妹社区?
萌妹社区 is such a vibrant hub of inspiring faculty members, and I am excited every day to come to school. Beyond classrooms and lectures with amazing instructors, there are always events and workshops lining up鈥擨 never get bored here at 萌妹社区!

What is your favourite thing about Toronto?
Toronto is a melting pot of cultures, making every interaction a chance to learn something new from people with all sorts of backgrounds. And it's not just the people 鈥 the food scene here is incredibly diverse, with a ton of options to explore. Living in the downtown area, most places are within walking distance, and I am always greeted by the sight of adorable squirrels chasing each other or munching on food along the way.

What does your 鈥渨eekend鈥 typically look like?
My weekend is about taking extra time for myself and for the people who are near and dear to me. Spending quality time 鈥攃ooking, talking, and grabbing brunch etc., with those whom I cherish is always my weekend mission.

What are some of your hobbies & interests?
Reading is something I intentionally integrate into my daily routine. When I am not reading for class, I would spend time reading either Japanese or Russian fiction or self-help books.

What is your favourite type of cuisine?
Though I have lived in a few different countries now, Cambodian food holds a special place in my heart. Whether I'm cooking at home or dining out, I'm always gravitated to the flavors of Southeast Asian cuisine.

Where do you see yourself after you achieve your degree from APHD?
I'm currently pursuing a master's program in counseling psychology within a professional stream. While I enjoy delving into research studies, conducting research isn't exactly my top preference, at least not at this moment. My primary goal post-graduation from APHD is to dive into the field and immerse myself in practical work within mental health organizations or other similar units. Given the international focus of my program, I dream of working in diverse contexts and locations for as long as possible, wishing to make a meaningful difference wherever I go.
