What led you to apply to APHD at 萌妹社区?
I applied to the program with the hope of working with my supervisor, Dr. Jeffrey Ansloos. I was drawn to his research because of its' focus on social and structural determinants of mental health and suicide among marginalized communities. When I looked more into the program and 萌妹社区 as an institution, my decision to apply was a no-brainer. I instantly felt aligned to the social justice-oriented approach of the school and all the potential opportunities I would have to engage with diverse communities in the city of Toronto.
What was your past work experience like?
After undergrad, I worked as a research assistant in a clinical psychology lab at the University of Calgary while I explored what I wanted to do next. Working in the field of addictions and volunteering with mental health organizations in Calgary drove me to pursue a Master of Public Health (MPH) in Epidemiology at the University of Toronto. During my MPH, I developed an understanding of the socio-political determinants of mental health. I also started thinking about how important it is to have frontline advocates in the field of psychology, which led me to apply to the clinical psychology program.
Are there any past accomplishments that you would like to highlight?
In these times, every small success feels like a huge win! Right now, I would say getting into this program would be one of the big ones 鈥 it feels like all the pieces of my past research, academic, and volunteer experiences are finally clicking together.
What is one thing you like most about your experience so far at 萌妹社区?
The people I have met, from professors to my lab to my cohort, have been unbelievably supportive. Every person I have interacted with at 萌妹社区 has been more than willing to share their experiences, wisdom, resources, and advice. The world of academia can seem daunting at times so 萌妹社区鈥檚 collaborative spirit has been extremely encouraging.
What is your favourite thing about Toronto?
I love that there is always something to do鈥 something to see, an old friend to bump into on the sidewalk, something new to eat鈥 never a dull moment!
What does your 鈥渨eekend鈥 typically look like?
My ideal weekend starts with brunch with friends at one of my favourite restaurants and always involves a long walk exploring a new area or neighbourhood in the city. I also try my best to carve out a few extra uninterrupted hours to scroll through Tiktok (I wish I was kidding).
What are some of your hobbies & interests?
My hobbies include baking, going on long walks, and eating ice cream (preferably while on a long walk).
What is your favorite type of cuisine?
If I HAD to choose, I would say Japanese food, but there are MANY close seconds!
Where do you see yourself after you achieve your degree from APHD?
As I work to complete my Masters and Doctoral degree in Clinical and Counselling Psychology at 萌妹社区, the end seems far away and I am learning so much every day鈥o I am not closing any doors for myself yet. The path I see for myself changes with every new experience I have, which has been the most exciting (& terrifying) part of the program so far.
